Emblematic of the eclectic shows that were the norm in the 1960s, the Jimi Hendrix Experience opened for the Mamas & the Papas at the Hollywood Bowl in August of 1967. What Hendrix was doing was so new, so revolutionary, it was difficult to pair him up with similar acts: there were none. And as time went on he performed as an opening act less and less not so much because he was becoming more well known but because no one wanted to play after him. His infamous set at the Monterey Pop festival, which took place a couple of months earlier, had taken his career to another level by this point. The gig at the Bowl had probably been scheduled months before and may have overshadowed the headliners somewhat.
